Students of the University of the State gathered for the first time in the academic year 2014 with the staff of the Jonathan Edwards Centre to read, discuss and reflect on various primary source texts. The evening begun with a communal meal, followed by a lively discussion on themes and topics for the coming academic year, and was closed with the reading of selected texts on the nature and extend of theology, i.e the question: what is theology? (Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologica, Bonaventure Commentaria in Quatuor Libros Sententiarum, Francis Turretin Institutio Theologiae Elencticae, and Jonathan Edwards’ sermon on Hebrew 5:12 on Christian Knowledge: Or the Importance and Advantage of a Thorough Knowledge of Divine Truth.”
Themes and topics for the coming years include, but not limited to, selected readings of Karl Barth’s Kirchliche Dogmatik, WD Jonker’s theological works, on “Holiness,” on “The Church and the Postmodern era,” and on “The Method of Preaching.”
